Regarding the D Ferguson at Lowndes Street. I emailed Barrhead Library for more info and they forwarded it to Amanda Robb. That lady has done some research, and it seems that the Lowndes Street 'D Ferguson' was a coal merchant. She then found an image which seems to confirm this.

Oh well thanks anyway. The truth is out there...

Next step is companies house itself, on-line seems to have so many omissions - even of companies that did exist during the period covered online. Highly frustrating, but they see the service more for active businesss reviews than historical research.
