Another Paperweight!
« on: March 14, 2005, 09:25:39 PM »
I guess this another one for Kev and/or Ray!

I am beginning to feel as if I'm settling down to concentrate on collecting paperweights after 'experimenting' with a wide variety of glass, old and new.  IMHO they are a microcosm of the whole variety of glass-working techniques!

The paperweight in these pictures was bought in about 1990 for my youngest son while we were on holiday, when we popped in to the Yelverton Paperweight Centre on a wet afternoon.  It was *not* the one he wanted (which he has never let me forget   ) as we were not prepared to spend as much as the one he *really* fancied cost on a 5-year-old!  (What cheapskates!     No, actually just hard-up parents raising 5 boys and trying to be fair to them all   )

But to get back to the story .....

On the bottom of the weight is engraved what I had always read as NG.  However, recently I have noticed on this board some references to Teign Valley Glass and I am now wondering if the initials could possibly be TVG!

Can anyone tell me if Teign Valley Glass were making paperweights of this type in the 1980's / '90's?  (Sorry the picture of the base is not very clear.)  http://tinypic.com/282dmt  http://tinypic.com/282dqq

 I bet it's because you've decided  you can sneak more paperweights into the house without your hubby noticing than any other kind of glass!!!  8)
Sorry, don't know about this one, but it looks to me as if it could well read TVG.  :D Cheers, Sue.

 Yes Leni, it was you I was addressing, regarding your decision to concentrate on paperweights.
It took me a while, casting around, buying various bits and types of glass that I liked before I decided exactly what I would concentrate on collecting. When I found bits that kept "speaking to me" from dark little corners, and finding that it was the same stuff, over and over again, although in many different styles and colours, I decided that I had some sort of "eye" for this particular maker and to concentrate on that. I've never regretted it. My other half likes it too, although he says he'll have to buy me a bigger house soon! I just adore BIG pieces, and organic, abstract designs. Perhaps it's because I appreciate how difficult it is to handle enormous volumes of the heavy metal. Funnily enough, in paintings, I have a strong preference for small and very detalied works and (mostly) dislike large abstract pieces.  :D  :D  :D Cheers, Sue

Unfortunately, Teign Valley Glass paperweights have not yet made it into mainstream collector discussions at club and book level.

[What a specialised bunch some of us are, with our distinctions between "collector weights" and "gift items", even though many of the so-called "gift items" are probably collected by many!]

So without a confirmed similar example it will be hard to say whether the green-and-blue 'blobbed' flower weight is TVG or not. However, I do have a small vase by TVG which has a simple, but effective, 'blobbed' ruby (darkish cranberry) coating. The initials are very difficult to see, let alone photograph, so I won't try. But the "G" is different to both of those shown by Leni and Jean. I suspect there were several different folk signing the TVG initials over the years.

I have had my small vase (which could easily be mistaken for Wedgwood Glass) for over 10 years, so 'blobbed' work at TVG could well have been in fashion in the 80s / 90s.

Perhaps a query should be sent to the folks who would know:

Hi all.
I'm all new and very green to this, I will introduce myself proper in the appropriate section a little later. In the mean time, TVG or Teign Valley Glass are situated in the outskirts of Bovey Tracey near Newton Abbot in Devon only just a short distance from me and are better known for their more commonly known name 'The House of Marbles. They produce a lot of intricate glass marbles of different sizes in old Victorian, modern and 'artistic' styles and have a large shop area and visitor centre on the premises and although I pass it regularly I haven't been in for several years, perhaps I now should I could then tell you all more about them. Anyway, I am uncertain to what degree they still produce glass weights or the names of past or current maker/designers names and it seems very odd that even living so very close to them I have only come across a very few TVG weights or indeed any of their other 'signed' or marked glass. I will try and find out more about them and keep you all informed. Regarding collectability and values of their wares I'm again uncertain as we don't see any of it about. Sorry for waffling on a bit!

Could the "eaten" pictures be added back.

This is a Teign Valley Glass pear. I have also seen it in red and as an apple. When I picked it up, I thought it was Wedgwood
