Karhula and another?
« on: April 07, 2005, 05:48:55 PM »
I seem to be getting into engraved/etched glass lately (where will this obsession end??!) - and wonder if you can help with identification?  :?

The first is a super little vase from Karhula in modernist style.  This little 6" high vase is signed, but I can't locate a designer who matches the initials...grrrr!

The second is another 6" vase with a stylised flower.  It's signed - but I can't work out who by...doesn't look like Orrefors type numbers either.  Very odd!

Here's some pics, thanks for taking a look.  I really love the Karhula one -it's a little bit bonkers!  :D  :D

The witch is sweet, if a bit stiff, cannot really see the other engraving :)

The tradition of witches in Sweden and Finland revolves
around the Easter holiday.

In Västervik, there is a parade where all young ladies dress up and parade through the town on the Thursday
before Easter day.

The witches are flying on a broom with a black cat and carry a kettle. I do not know why.

There are two or three designers in Finland with the
initals JL. Are these the initals on your vase?

:D  :D  :D I LOVE the witch Max!. I don't think she's stiff at all, just hanging on in a stiff breeze, as you would have to, balanced on a broomstick!
I don't know much about cut glass, I'm afraid. Cheers, Sue

The Kettle and Cauldron are interchangeable based on cultural variances although often you get both. The kettle should be copper not iron.

From Faust (As we seem to be using literary references here  )

Mephistopheles [going nearer to the fire].
And then this pot?

Male Ape and Female Ape.
The half-witted sot!
He knows not the pot,
He knows not the kettle!

Mephistopheles.
Unmannerly beast!

:D  :D Seeing it's going all Faustian here, here's a vase a bought last week from Siddy Langley...inscribed:

'The devil will come and Faustus must be damn'd, who pulls me down?'

Hmm...still no wiser who the designer for my Karhula vase is though!  Maybe he/she's lost in the mists of time, or maybe they just went bonkers after engraving this vase.   :?  :D

PS Lovely to see you Bill - I've got the Glassriket brochures, still mulling over a visit to Sweden.   :D

JL Karhula
"...art glass was moved to iittala in 1954, leaving Karhula with fully automated glass container production" - Smoke & Ice
So it has to date prior to then

Initials could be the reverse of the Anglo norm so maybe ..........

Greta-Lisa Jaderholm-Snellman ?
Karhula ? /  iittala 1945-62
Shown in
Finnish Modern Design: Utopian Ideals and Everyday Realities, 1930-97
Marianne Aav (Editor), Nina Stritzler-Levine (Editor)

Lisa Johanssen-Pape ?
Karhula 1930- ?
She was designing lighting in the mid 50s for iittala
Extra : From this bio it seems unlikely to be her

Do you have that book?  I'd like a look at it if so....and I love the title!

Thanks for all the help people, I'm really rather attached to my 'witchy' vase.  I think I feel a bit sorry for it, what with Karhula being long gone and obsolete.  Like it's family's gone missing or something...deary me, I'll be crying over it next...
