Unknown pontil marks
« on: April 09, 2007, 11:06:22 AM »
Apart from collecting actual paperweights, I also collect pontil marks - even if I don't buy the paperweight to go with it. Recently there were two quite distinctive marks on ebay:

2 ships on water

letters RED within silhouette of a key

Click on legends to see the ebay auction.

Can anyone attribute these stamps? Thanks and best regards - Wolf

Hi Lynne,

thank you for the offer! The one I copied from the internet is 1000 x 900 pixel - so if you have an even larger one, this would be nice. Best send it by email - my address is wolf at seelentags dot de.

BTW - which way round should it be looked at - animals in the upper or the lower row? And has the lettering been finally deciphered?

Best regards  -  Wolf

Hi Wolf, dont know if this will help but there is a Redkey in America, Indiana.

And there is even a paperweight maker living there - Jim Davis - but at least in 1982 he used a different pontil mark:

Could be him in another year - but even if not, I just added another pontil mark to my collection ;-).

Hi WOlf,
The ships ring a bell as a porcelin mark.  Just a faint ring.  Maybe have a look at some of the porcelin sites.
Kind regards,
PS now that I have written this something tells me that it is in fact three ships that is a porcelin mark :-[

On its way as we speak..

You have to turn it round 90 degrees, and then suddenly, in a DOH! moment, the shield and three lions spring into view...

DOH!!!

Thank you very much!

I have a spider lily weight with an unusual pontil BPK for the Big Pine Key Glassworks, it is going on ebay soon I think. I also have a Jennings Bonnell frit weight with his JB Pontil mark, various St Clair, Joe Bob & Maude, then I have weights with Gibson and Prestige and Gentile impressed pontils.
Liskeard Glass did an impressed LG Pontil but they also made weights for St Tudy paperweight centre and I have one with ST 1976 impressed but when this moved to Yelverton they made more and I have one with Y1981 in the base
Hope this helps - although you probably know most of it I guess
Dave

Well .. I've started my collection fairly recently - whilst I have seen most of the marks mentioned, I only have actual pictures of a few:
Gentile 1976 (bell)
Gentile 1977 (ship)
Gentile 1978 (eagle)
Gentile 1979 (star)
Gentile since 1980 (glassblower)
Gentile 2000 (numerals)
Liskeard (LG)
Prestige (2004)
St.Clair Joe
... plus a few more you didn't list as in your posession.
Any addition to my collection (for personal use only) would be greatly appreciated!
Best regards - Wolf

I have three weights by Woods. I'll send you a pic of one of their pontil marks if you like. I don't know anything about them other than they seem to have made paperweights for the US bicentennial.
I collect Scottish and Italian paperweights and anything else that strikes my fancy.
