Topic: Large Glass dish with fir/pine cone decoration

Hi Guys
Here is a link to an early topic of mine, http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,5048.msg41440.html#msg41440 would like to revive it

I have a large clear dish 14.25" long 9.5" wide and 1.5" high at each end the lip is 2"  and could act as a handle on these is a fir/pine cone decoration very much lik Jobling it weighs 2.549kg.

At the right top end is REIMES and on the opposite side is FRANCE this is read from the base side, on the inside bottom right is Verlux in script.

I would very much like to ID this piece, I belive it is known in opalscent, I have searched with know luck so far, are or have there been any glass factorys in REIMS I belive VSL used this name also, is there a connection?

Hi Tony,

Here's my two cent's worth.  I was always under the impression that Verlux was an alternate line made by Etling (or same factory).  Can't for the life of me remember where I read this (or whether this is correct).  Had a quick browse through the usual glass reference books to no avail.

Couldn't access your previous thread so I hope I haven't gone over old ground here...

I have looked at the available literature on the subject of Verlux some years ago and it was suggested by several authors that this was a brand name from VSL. However, I could find no firm evidence of this so assumed all authors quoted eachother, and was stuck with a "could be", "might be" or "possibly" formulation. And indeed, now that  a Verlux piece appears marked "REIMS",  VSL disappears completely.
Reims is the location of several glass industries. It is the capital of Champagne, and produces an incredible number of champagne bottles. It is also the home of VMC (Verrerie Mécanique Champenoise) who produce advertising ashtrays, flower frogs, and general mechanical glassware. I'm not quite sure how VMC came into existence (it is usual to find several mergers, takeovers and name changes over the years) but Verlux may well have been one of their lines.
