Cenedese Glass Giancarlo Begotti artist HELP!
« on: April 26, 2007, 05:59:11 PM »
Hi. I have a very large platter red murano glass with cenedese glass sticker on back ( platter is framed right now) it is hand enameled by Giancarlo begotti signed by him in 64. the enamel painting is detailed and of Watteau. I have only been able to find that begotti is still a shop in venice and that he is no longer is an artist there but had enameled murano glass for important dignataries, the pope, etc. I did see a small goblet enameled by begotti on a spanish auction site which sold for 2500. after that i am at a loss. i am wondering why...if begotti was such an important artist there is no web information on him and if anyone can tell me anymore about him and his work with murano glass. Is this a rare piece I have? I am interested in selling this piece but need to research and find a market for it. can anyone help? thanks so much!!

A stunning and rare piece of glass, but outside of my own field also. Check out

The best person I can think of to assist you is Aldo Bova at the above gallery who I have always found extremely helpful in the past so an e-mail with pictures to him could take you forward.

Hi. I am not sure what you mean by address under photo 5? The platter was framed and the company name who framed it was on the back paper but they are long out of business...is that the address you saw? please forgive my ignorance!??
thanks
mar

Hi Mary, your piece actually depicts a copy of a famous painting done in 1717 by French artist, Jean-Antoine Watteau (see more of him here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antoine_Watteau ), not a place called Watteau.

It is called L'Imbargo per Citera or The Embarkation for Cythera (aka The Pilgrimage to Cythera) , and the original is in Louvre in Paris, I believe.  The label on yours says (translated)
Watteau, The Embarkation for Cythera, reprod. [i.e.reproduced/copied] G Begotti Ars Cenedese - there's a little about Begotti here: http://www.veniceincoming.it/hot/vedishop1.asp?ID=begotti&Lingua=uk - their own website seems to have vanished.

You can see a poster copy of the painting here: http://www.allposters.com/-sp/Embarkation-for-Cythera-1717-Posters_i1347583_.htm

Hope this is useful.

Hi,
Begotti is a pretty well known (here in Venice) glass painter. Somebody offered me some goblets decorated by him (or by his son?) last year. The goblets were not good enought (too heavy) and I didn't carry them, but the decor was very very good. There are very few people working in this way now.
I'm not surprise that you don't find infos on the web; those craftmen don't care about this kind of promotions and often they pass their life hidden in some furnace creating masterpieces. Begotti is just a decorator, but it is more or less the same for master glassmakers as Carlo Tosi "Caramea", real pieces of art glass history, but pratically unknown aout the small group of hardcore collectors.

Sincerely

Alex
