Slumped lampshade, not Chance glass
« on: May 07, 2007, 06:46:22 PM »
Does any one know if there is any value in a large chance glass napkin style light shade prob around 18" in diameter.
I saw one today but never picked it up
Cheers

Hi Ian,

Did you check out David E's site? http://www.chanceglass.net/
You might be better posing your question in "Slumped Glass."
If I know, I'll comment. If I think I know, I'll have a go. If I have no idea, I'll just keep quiet and learn from others, so the next time I'll know.

If the light shades are anything like the hankie vases I would have assumed that a lot would depend on the size, condition and the colours/pattern.  The hankie vases vary wildly in price according to those factors - anyway, as Della rightly says the slumped glass forum/David E should be able to help.

David is a bit busy right now but he should be along in a day or two. Sounds worth going for if you can still, I see no mention D's site so could be rather unusual!

18 inches diameter sounds far too big for a Chance Hankie - in fact it's pretty huge for a lightshade. 8 inch was the largest vase. There was experimentation with turning 7 inch ones into lampshades but that's all, nothing commercial. All the printed and self-coloured hankie patterns are given on David's site. If its not there, it's probably not Chance

To the best of my knowledge Chance never made these lightshades. Christine is right: experimentation was made to adapt the 7-inch handkerchief vases (Carnival colours only) to turn these into lightshades, but I don't think there was ever a deliberate purpose to create purpose-made ones as this would require moulds made for this job. However, I will ask my two contacts if they can recall them.
