Hi,
The date cane reads 1848 to me. I know that there have been a few threads on the 1848 date cane, but I am not a weight collector, so I cannot be of more help, sorry.  ::) :D
If I know, I'll comment. If I think I know, I'll have a go. If I have no idea, I'll just keep quiet and learn from others, so the next time I'll know.

I do not know a whole lot about Whitefriars but they have a distinct look to my eye. This lovely bottle looks very Whitefriars to me.
I collect Scottish and Italian paperweights and anything else that strikes my fancy.

Hi,
Having had a look in the Letts guide (the one by Sarah Rossi) it does look like Whitefriars based on the canes, date and dimensions.  The four seperate canes making up the date seems to be consistent as Letts refer to it as "crudely" marked in four canes. I am sure one of the "experts" will be along to confirm or show me the fault of my ways  ;D ;D ;D
I am only slightly jealous >:D
Kind regards
Karel

Thanks all for taking the time and trouble to consult your books it is very much appreciated  , unfortunately ,  i am dealing in  glass items to fund my other hobby ( i promote a band)  . therefore as most of my bits and pieces it will be for sale shortly and will hopefully go to someone who can truly appreciate the work and not as i do as just a way to a means

Thanks for everyones contributions so far

Greg

...well I found a value for it.....so my bid is not going to be worth much unless you stuff up the listing badly ;D ;D ;D  I would suggest you list it under Farming, Garden, Implements...Lots of people there need bottles, and that is all it is >:D

I have read several threads on the "English 1848 cane" - the general conclusion is that
1. the year (1848) is a fake;
2. it is most likely Walsh-Walsh (possibly Arculus) around 1920/30 - see Robert Hall "Old English Paperweights" (page 114).

1848 seems to be the only year used in this manner (for English paperweights - many other fake years in Murano paperweights) - but this one seems to be quite common: I have seen (on the internet) pictures of at least 5 paperweights / ink wells with canes of this type.

Bob Hall estimates the example in the book at $ 1000-1250 ... but my feeling is that the prices mentioned in the book include some wishful thinking - at least they don't seem to be possible on ebay nowadays: there was one of this type sold on ebay in February - for $ 225.

Several attributions are also for Whitefriars - but there are doubts that Whitefriars produced paperweights before the 1950ies.
