Bagley, Jobling, Sowerby uranium green squirrel bowl?
« on: May 22, 2007, 03:50:37 PM »
Hi,

Have just found this bowl in an antique centre but I have not seen one like it before.

It has a squirrel on each of the four sides and a frosted tree at each corner.

On the base is etched Reg Patt. Applied For.

Mod: Photo's uploaded to GlassGallery.

It glows a wonderful apple green under my little UV torch, so can't wait till it gets darka nd I can shine my large light on it.

Does anyone know who made it?

Hi there,
This link shows one in amber but has no documented attribution.

Barbara — I thought that I had pencilled a note against the Sowerby reg. no. in my "blue book", but I hadn't.   Full 3-piece sets are very difficult to find.   I can't recall seeing a square-based centrepiece figurine, so your bowl may be complete in its own right.

Does anyone know the reg. no.?

 Hil and Bernard,

Thanks for the ID, I have never seen one before but it looked so different that it called to me.

I suppose that some designs were more popular so made in greater quanties, and others had a smaller run.

I have the same square bowl, also in that delicious vaseline colouring. Mine has Reg Applied For etched in a circle on the base - and a star in the space between the first word and the last word.

Mine has a squirrel "figurine" (I almost wrote frog   :o)). The shape of the base of the squirrel item is round - but it fits neatly into the slightly rounded middle of the square bowl. The squirrel is almost identical to the little creature on the sides of the bowl. I have always felt it was Sowerby (style, colour) but no proof.

Hi Glen,

It just looked so sweet, and it had that "glow" in the sunshine.  Its a very spring-like colour.

Just had a proper look at the base and it has the same wording etched on it.  :-[

If anyone has access to a complete centrepiece set, I would welcome details of any inscription or number on the underside of the plinth.   A photograph or rubbing would be a real bonus.   TIA.

Here's my amber one with a plinth, don't know if it's the original but fits very well, no markings though I'm afraid, same markings to base of bowl as others.

I'm sure these are Sowerby; my mum has a Uranium one with the moulded registration number. No plinth though (but I do have another interesting Sowerby plinth I'll be posting soon...). I can't remember the reg. number, but will get her to check & will post photos as soon as possible.

Mine has the Reg. No. 796446, corresponding to a registration date of 19th September 1934. Photos hopefully to follow shortly....
