Topic: What on earth is it ?? suggestions please

I bought this today in a charity shop because it was unusual.
It stands about 18" high with a hook at the top & the globe on the base is about 4" in diam around the edges you can see that it has been pushed in to around 1.5" in three places as well as the base then there are three holes put in presumably to stand something in it. It is extremly light & delicate

That is a strange object!  I can only think it's some kind of wacky bird-feeder to hang from a tree, but that doesn't account for the indentation in the base.

How about a hummingbird or butterfly feeder for a tropical house to hold bits of sponge soaked in sugar syrup

As it is obviously too high for the Christmas tree, I join Max and Christine

How about, hang it from above a light bulb and put essential oils in the indentations?
Eucalyptus, tea tree and thyme, to kill germs.

But why would the holes point downwards? Wouldn't any food drip out?

The holes don't point down; they're in the sides of the base part

Yes, they're in the base part, and in this picture
here the hanging hook seems to be going upwards, which means that the indentations head upwards.
