Apple and snake? Try Garden of Eden.

there is a GARDEN OF EDEN pattern that was possibly made by McKee, but that one has the snake poking the head out at the bottom rim of the cup, not on the handle.  the McKee version is also called LOTUS AND SERPENT.  I have looked all through the pressed glass mug book by Mordock and Adams, and it is not in the book.

Dave:

This mug actually is in Pattern Glass Mugs by Mordock & Adams on page 15 but at an angle so the handle is hard to see clearly.  They call it Snake in the Orchard and no maker or time frame is provided.  Shown in amber, no other colours named.

Hi,
I think it is a Davidson No 218 can. Is it about 1/2 pint in size ?

Regards

Chris

Hi Sue,

I'm certain it is a Davidson No 218 can. This can is one of about 5 shown in a Davidson catalogue from around 1885. I have only seen a couple in the flesh, none of them had the Davidson Lion trademark. The absence of a trademark could either mean it is from a mould made after 1890 or it was a mould Davidson purchased from another factory. Davidson is known to have bought moulds from other factories which closed including the Neville Glass Works (1881), W H Heppell & Co (1884) and Thos. Gray & Co. (1884).

The can is not illustrated in Davidson's 1912 catalogue and is also not listed in the 1922 production records. My guess is therefore that they stopped making the can sometime in the 1890s.

Regards

Chris
