Strange "paperweight" (?)
« on: June 11, 2007, 08:52:06 PM »
We have just acquired a strange item:
http://cgi.ebay.ch/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140125587516

The seller states "was told it is a ships type" - has anyone ever heard this expresssion?

Is it two pieces? My first thought was slicking stone not paperweight.

Is it two pieces?
From the description, I would guess - yes.
I will hopefully be able soon (when it has arrived) to give a better description.

It could be because the shape is rather like a ships decanter, (flat base to stop it toppling over) if it is in two pieces, and the bottom half has a hollow in it, it could be a ship's ink well? just a thought.

You should take most of what many sellors write in their desciptions with a grain of salt. Maybe whoever sed it thought it was used on a boat. Anyway, there is no such derivation re: "ships." This is neither an interesting, valuable, or collectibile glass piece. Just a standard, plain glass paperwaight for use on a desk. And, since the seller is from Germany, the primary provenance is that it's German made. Certainly, i's nothing special at all, but at least you didn't pay too much for it.

Oh well, Wuff,
Obviously Anglo-German provenance on the basis that the seller is in the UK, item located in Penzance, and selling on eBay.de  ;D

Marcus

Now I know how to make attributions. What part of Germany is Cornwall in, then?
