Fratelli Toso?
« on: June 15, 2007, 03:06:21 AM »
Have just received this gorgeous centerpiece, it's huge 22inches, would this technique be called pulled loop, and is it by Fratelli Toso?

Also a vase which has red inner and I think pink opalino, does this look to be Fratelli Toso also?

Thanks in advance,

I have seen the design of your bowl a couple of times, but could never verify that F. Toso did the bowl. To me, it looked like the pattern could be theirs, but I was uncertain about the shape of the bowl. One time I bought a pulled loop feather scale bowl that looked a lot like them, but the shape and pontil were not right. I was later told that it was a post-70's Czech piece. Does the pontil of your bowl look like your other Fratelli Toso bowls? I would not doubt that it is Toso, but it is always nice to find a match that is positively identified. Whoever made it, it is a beautiful bowl and appears to be a good quality piece of art glass.

Hello Anita, Thanks for your help, have added a photo of the base, and to me does look like a Murano item, have had a few with this base in the past, but nothing in this size!  I know nothing about Czech glass, so maybe I could be wrong.

It's a magnificent piece whoever made it, will hope someone out there can identify it.

I would be very comfortable attributing the bowl to Fratelli Toso, based on similar pieces I've owned and extensive photos in the Pina Italian Glass book.  F.T. did a lot of bowls in this general shape and style, some more artistically successful than others.  They're a lot of fun, and are relatively affordable.  The vase is interesting.  I've been trying to positively attribute a "alabastro/opalino" sculpture (posted previously on this board), and Archimede Seguso did the most in this technique than others by far.  I don't know that others have been working extensively in this technique in recent years/decades, but I could be dead wrong about that.  The form doesn't ring a bell as A.S., but I'm a relative neophyte and am still waiting for the Rosa Barovier Mentas book from Amazon -- they take forever to ship items they don't stock.

Good luck,
Charles.

Thanks Charles, The vase is still in the mail on it's way over, so once I receive it, might get more of an idea. I see in my Toso book that Toso used the pink opalescent as well as Seguso.

Thanks for your imput on the large bowl,
Sandy

Sandra — The effect could also be obtained by slumping the glass on a low cone or low inverted cone of radial metal rods or vertical plates.    It could also be obtained by threading and then blowing into a ribbed dip-mould before opening out into a bowl.   Neither of these two could be called pulled loop, unless the phrase described the effect rather than the manufacturing technique.

We are planning another week on Murano this coming autumn, so I will try to remember to ask, or, even better, watch someone making it.

Sandymae, Barclay Galleries has a centerpiece bowl that has a base similar to yours. The bowl is attributed to Barovier & Toso. The top pattern is different, but the bottom is so similar that the maker may be the same. The link is http://www.trocadero.com/stores/barclaygalleries/items/654228/item654228.html if you want to check it.
