Any information on this (very?) old glass (seal?) bottle
« on: June 22, 2007, 04:51:51 PM »
Hi all,

Just wondered if anyone here could give me any information about this old glass bottle. It stands just over 9.5" (24cm) tall, is obviously hand made and has, I think, some considerable age to it.

I think it may originally have had a seal on it as there is a reddish coloured area on it, a little of which is rough as if something was stuck there. There is also a small 'nipple' on the side of the bottle. The bottom is quite deeply recessed and has an unfinished pontil mark.

Nipple ~ http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/displayimage.php?pos=-7595

Many thanks in anticipation, John.

It is not a seal bottle as they have a glass seal. Could be wine, beer or something else aged 1800-early 1900's.

Thanks very much Frank.
I wondered if it might be a seal bottle with the seal knocked off! Also thought it might be older than that as the shape is very irregular.
Thanks again, John.

No, but it possibly had a wax seal. Irregular bottles are still made in the more primitive glassworks. Even early moulded ones had handmade lips.
