ID Please of Very Old victorian Piano Insulator
« on: June 30, 2007, 03:29:26 PM »
I picked this Piano Insulator up last week as it looked uite interesting as it was inscribed around the top, I know there is quite a following collecting Piano insulators and this one just looked different to many others,it looks very old and made from similar looking glass to the old green  Dump paperweights, quite iregular in shape and lots of bubbles , lots of wear on the top and bottom, around the top there is quite a long inscription, but due to the wear I cannot read it all, what I can read is the word KIDSGROVE the VE very faint which may be the town near Staffordshire, I do not know if glass was ever produced there ?, the word INVENTOR, there is at least 1 or 2 more words with about 12 letters, the 1st 2 may be RO and the last 4 OMAS, i think the last word may be THOMAS

Roy,
You may want to try asking the Stoke-on-Trent Museum and Art Gallery.
As a former heavily industrial city, it is highly likely that along with ceramics, coal and steel industries, glass would have been made in Kidsgrove, which is only a matter of three or so miles from Tunstall, one of the Six Towns that form the city. Failing that, try the Reference Library in Hanley, which has a local history unit, (ask them to check the Kelly's Directories for the late Victorian period), or Keele University which has a very strong holding of local history records.

regards,

Marcus

Roy & Marcus — See link (first provided by Christine, but that reply seems to have disappeared).

Note that the date appears to be a generation or two later than expected.

Roy, yours is a different shape to the one in my hand, which is cylindrical.   What are the two diameters and the height, and is the base flat?

Marcus — I am sure that I have seen references to bottle works in Stoke-on-Trent.

Bernard and Marcus

Thanks for the link

The diameter varies between 75 and 80mm and the height 42mm, concaved top diameter 50mm , the base is not completely flat , there is a slight base rim, while the base is also very slightly concaved

regards roy
