Bimini Buttons query
« on: July 04, 2007, 08:41:47 PM »
Hi everyone
I found some buttons with the Bimini name on the back
As this is all new to me, we searched the web and found this site

I have posted 3 pictures at:
http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/displayimage.php?pos=-7768
Hope some one can help date and value them.

Thanks in anticipation

Alan

Hi Alan and welcome to the board. You would have been better to start a new post with Bimini buttons in the title. Maybe a mod will move this for you.

Bimini or Orplid glass was made between 1923 and 1955, however as far as I know they only produced buttons after 1938 after moving to Soho from Vienna (dating your buttons between 1938 and 1955). The firm changed its name from Bimini to Orplid within a few years of arriving in the U.K, and a new label was used from 1943, which does not include the name Bimini. This would date your buttons between 1938, and 1943.

The buttons would have been made at either in his Soho studio (1938-1940) or the basement of his home (1940-1943), which he had to move to as his studio was bombed.

Hope that helps, sorry I can't be exact. They were popular during the war, as jewellery and small decorative items were scarce due to war-time production.

Hi Alan,

I have had a fair few Bimini buttons recently, lovely ones, including the same pattern as yours. As both Karel and Nazeing have said, the best info is at the Glass Museum site, in the article on Bimini, (Karel linked to it).

If you are planning to keep these, they are very attractive, if you are planning to sell, the Japanese LOVE Bimini!
Thank you very much!

Lynne
