Id help French? and John Deacons
« on: July 11, 2007, 07:44:31 AM »
Hi,
You win some you lose some, I lost on this one :280131651972 I thought it was French but after KevH's comments in this post: http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,16081.0.html I am not sure.  Anybody have an opinion.

From the same seller I won on this one:280131646246 and I am very happy, cheap as chips I thought.  Just for confirmation the JHD cane referred to I understand is the one John Deacons used when he had "J" glass, is this correct?....and please dont tell me this is chinese ;D
Kind regards
KarelM

In Andy Dohan's book you'll find "JHD" for John Deacons together with years 1995 and 1996 - and the mention that this was used at least as early as 1993 - so your's might be the earliest example known ;-).

Would be great if you could provide us with a decent photograph of the cane, once the weight has arrived at your home.

You mean the scrambled one?
No idea: I'm not really keen on scrambled weights and therefore don't watch / read about them.

Yip, I meant the scrambeled one.  I am normally also not so keen, but here was an opportunity and thats why I bid on it.  The same goes for the one I won; wrong title and a midweek finish did it for me!
Thanks,

I agree on the scramble.  It looks like St. Louis.  Post some pictures when you get it.

It was a St Louis scramble. We spotted it and John bid for it (rbm6167) but unfortunately lost out at last second. He was trying to get it at too much of a bargain!!!

JHD signature canes is an interesting one....

My pop used to buy direct from John after stumbling across 'a guy who looked like a farmer' on a trip to Perth and the surrounding area one summer.

He amassed a collection of about thirty-odd weights from 1993 onwards and the JHD cane started appearing in 1994.

Amoungst the pieces he collected were Johns first ever attempt at the basket (with torsade handle) - didn't quite go to plan as they torsade wasn't perfectly executed and had a fault or two....JHD1994

The basket cushions that John developed with an alternating green then white cane garland are typically JHD1994 irrespective of the central design.

Dad also got an early attempt at the double overlays that were to become a Deacons staple - classically constructed with millefiori rondello on opaque cushion. JHD 1994.

Also a triple insect which is truly awesome!!!!!! JHD1994.

Plenty of weights that predate these but they are signed either with JD or just with date canes...

The lampwork on the piece illustarted is loose and a little crude by John's usually very high standards. This is sometimes what you get with John's work.

Hi,
The "J-Glass" era ran from 1978 untill March 1983 when it closed.John continued under his own name after that,Myself,Harry McKay(weightmaker),Archie Anderson(the main cutter)and Brian Lawson (also a cutter)  joined Caithness Glass at different times during that year.
