Bulb (?) Vase with Celery Handle
« on: July 18, 2007, 12:23:40 PM »
This one is going back a while - I posted this vase way back in Nov 2005, but it never got a reply, so I thought I'd chance my arm again with a new photograph.

I think it's another crocus vase... maybe... as the opening is around 25mm. 165mm tall and 130mm diameter. The glass is very bubbly and old-looking, but I'm not sure if it has any actual age to it. My own stab in the dark would be 1950s/60s, probably English. But... this really isn't my area and I'm probably completely wrong!

Hopefully someone will have more of a clue. Thanks in advance.

Any pontil mark? How is the top finished?

No pontil, beveled and polished rim.

So probably mould blown then. The handle looks very Victorian in style. Can we have a full-on view please  :). Not that I'm demanding or anything

I'll take a few more detailed snaps tomorrow - this one was really just an afterthought in the midst of photographing a load of new stock.  ;D

Thanks Nic, don't think it's a Victorian handle, more an updated version of one. Don't have any answer though

No, I would have been very surprised if it had turned out to be a Victorian piece. Reminds me a lot of the handles that Whitefriars were using for their decorative jugs (although this piece isn't Whitefriars) which is why my initial guess was 1950s-60s.

But thanks for looking anyway.  :)

It was more a case of seeing if the handle was the same as the Thomas Webb Victorian variant than thinking it was Victorian.
