ID Help - Strathearn or Something Else?
« on: July 27, 2007, 06:28:54 PM »
At first I thought this was Strathearn, but now beginning to think it might not be. Any help or suggestions will be appreciated.
Size: 3 1/8" dia. x 1 13/16" high.  Bottom has a basal ring that shows wear and a center where the pontil was ground out.

Hi rsts

I think you are right to query this being a Strathearn

I would say its Vasart although of course late Vasart and early Strathearn are often very difficult to tell apart.

The clincher for me is the rough grinding out of the pontil - this is typical of Vasart.

Regards

Derek

Derek -  Thanks for the ID help.  I will do some looking and see if I can pinpoint a time frame in Vasart.

I agree with Derek. Vasart 1956 to 1964.

See the section on Basal Features in my page on Vasart / Strathearn, which shows 6 weights in my "wide grinding" sub-section, three of which have the labels (Vasart / Pirelli) from that period.

But don't take everything I say in my pages as being a certainty! For instance, although I have not updated the details for one particular weight, a friend has told me of a very, very similar example which has a Perthshire Paperweight label - so I might go back to my first thoughts on that one!
