Is this Dartington Crystal?
« on: June 11, 2005, 06:45:23 PM »
Hello everyone,
Am i correct in thinking this small vase was made by Dartington Crystal? It has an acid etched mark on the bottom, but it wouldn't show on the photograph so i have done a diagram. Is this Dartingtons mark? or if not does anyone know who's it could be please?
Many thanks, Janet

:D Hi Janet, The vase looks like Dartington to me, and the mark looks like an updated Dartington mark, based on the mark shown in Lesley Jackson's 20th Century Glass. It's hard to tell from a drawing though, which bit is etched and which is blank. I'd say the logo is about the same. I'd be quite happy to give it a Dartington attribution, if it was mine. :D

...and so would I.  Nice and sparkly isn't it?  I'd say it's quite contemporary.   :D

:D I'd agree, Max. Dartington recently (within the last 5-6 years) started doing ranges based on older designs, eg., some lovely pieces with foil, ruby/cranberry (using real gold) victorian styles and so on. I think this might be one of the victorian style vases produced recently.

Sue

Have you checked out the Sue Ryder shops recently?  They have Dartington vases.  Rather nice retro sort of bullet shape, yellow, purple etc, all cased too.

Maybe it's about time someone re-marketed Dartington, it seems to have fallen on hard times?  Bit sad really after great Frank Thrower designs in the 70's.   :(

:D Hi Max, I don't really know what's going on with them either. :?  I was seriously impressed with some of the revival things they were doing, before they went all cranberry and victorian (not my thing), and even specially ordered a lovely foiled plate. I also bought a couple of "Alchemy" Dartington Studio vases. (I'll post some pictures tomorrow).
Perhaps the stuff just did not sell well, and was expensive to produce as they were using traditional ways (eg., real gold) of making it?  :?
