Fenton Rosebowl.. Pattern and age info?
« on: August 22, 2007, 08:55:27 AM »
I bought this Fenton bowl yesterday in a local shop. Not having any Fenton at all to compare with and not much in Australia Im finding it hard to trace information.

I found out its called a Rosebowl from a knowledgeable glassie.. Unsure of whether its called satin glass? It glows under a black light..btw. I have found a carnival Fenton bowl that looks similar in pattern.. Orange Tree. Is this the same pattern? I have shown the Fenton base mark because I read on a listing that if it didnt have a mark it was early 1900's, which I was told this was when I bought it. my very first piece of Fenton anyway :)

Hi I can add some info for you. This is Satin, specifically its called Lime Sherbert and the pattern is Leaf and Orange tree. This particular color and style was made from 1973-1979. A word of warning, if you decide to pack it away, do not use Newsprint. The ink from newspaper will stain this particular glass and its very hard to get off.
Best regards Terry

Thanks Terry,

So much for my early 1900's I was told. :( Ah well, you live and learn..and I never learn.

Its still a nice bowl anyway :)

To add some more information about the Fenton mark. It was first used in 1970 and by 1975 almost all items carried it. Sometimes on the satin items, such as yours, the mark is very hard to see. A neat trick is to wet your finger and run it over where you suspect the mark. Getting it slightly wet makes it pop right out and you can't miss it.

This mould, used to make your rose bowl in Lime Sherbet during the 1970s, dates back to about 1910-11, when it was used to make what we called a "nut bowl" in the iridescent ware that is dubbed Carnival glass today. Originally, this piece was simply designated No. 1401, and the pattern is called "Orange Tree" by most collectors and "Fenton's Flowers" by others. See pages 34, 58 and 118 of the book Fenton Glass: The First Twenty-five Years.

Thank you James,
All that information is really interesting and Ive learnt a lot. I also let the antique dealer know that it was from the 1970's. I guess he was thinking of the bowl shape (mold), which is an early one but didnt know about the 70's colour and re-use of the mold.
As I said, we are limited in information about Fenton in Australia and are grateful for you sharing the knowledge with us.
