unidentified toothpick - Salviati
« on: September 16, 2007, 01:12:08 AM »
does anyone recognize this darling little toothpick holder? it's about 5cm tall and 4cm wide at the rim. it's a plum colored glass with lots of gold inclusions, four dimpled sides and a rough pontil.

thanks,
bidda

I haven't got a clue but was under the impression we're talking 70s or 80s here - should you find out let me know because I have one in red (with dots) and one in opal with gold leaf.

thanks, Anne :)

i came upon a vase that was made in the same color and gold (much bigger and heavier though, so it very well might be nothing related). it has a label that i don't recognize but maybe one of you will?

That's one of Laura's items, and as she's a member here she may well be able to tell you more about both items.

I used to collect them i still have about ten in different colours and sizes all with gold inclusions, i was told they were late 19th early 20th century. James Powell also did them in blue opal and gold they are in the Whitefriars book as copies of early Roman glass,  our pal Pinky bought a Salviati one a few weeks back, Jph.

Hi,

I would think that the toothpick holder, or mini-vase, is circa 1900 - 192s. It's possible that it was made later, but that kind of thin, light work is typical of early 20th century Murano glass.

I don't recognize the label on my vase, either.  It appears to be older to me, probably about 1920.  There are actually differences between it and the toothpick.  My vase is actually pulegoso glass, meaning it is infused with frothy air bubbles. Also, the way the gold is applied to the glass is different.  I wouldn't assume that whoever made my piece also made the toothpick.

Hope this info helps a bit.

John, that's in keeping with my ideas about the date. thanks.

Laura, i thought the connection to your vase and my toothpick/vase was dicey, at best  :spls2: i'm happy that you think the toothpick is c.1900-1920 as that was my suspicion as well.

thank you all so much for your helpful insights :)
