Need help with orrefors signature - I think?
« on: June 02, 2009, 12:05:17 AM »
I have a very thin art deco conical shaped vase that clearly looks like an early piece by Simon Gate, but I am having trouble deciphering the meaning of the signature.  It reads - of. N.R. 14G7 A.2.S.
or it may read - of. N.R. 14GT. A.2.5.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks,
Scott

Good Morning:

NR does not make sense on a Gate form. Can you post a photo which would help id the glass art.

I have attached an image of the piece here.  It is very thin glass and as you can see.  I did not get a picture of the signature here.  Thanks for any help.

Scott

Your work appears to me to be a copper wheel engraved form designed by Nils Landberg which appeared in
1935.

The shape appears to be the form designed by Simon Gate G481 appearing in the 1932 catalog. Orrefors designers
would use the forms of other designers as a canvas for their engraving.

The number series 1400 was also used in the 1935 period.

The last number which is not correct is probably the initials of the copper wheel engraver.

Thank you so much!  May I ask how you figured this out?

Hi:

I am a Swede by marriage.

By background includes spending time at the Orrefors Glass School learning to blow glass and cut glass, spending many hours in the museum and archives and studing to be a glass appraiser with the Appraisers Association of America before moving to Sweden

I have also written a book "Scandinavian Glass-Creative Energies" published by Schiffer Publishing Ltd. I live in
Sweden and go to the glass works on a fairly frequent basis.

My spouse Margareta ran the Gallery Orrefors in New York and set up their flag ship gallery in Stockholm so she
is very helpful with Orrefors art and functional glass.

But the most important way to id work is to have a library of books on Swedish and other glass to use as a
reference.

Hope this answers your question.
