Ariel technique bowl - Boda? Orrefors? 'Frigger'?
« on: October 01, 2007, 11:35:42 AM »
I bought this little bowl at Cambridge Glass Fair yesterday, and I wonder if anyone has any idea what it is?

It's a technique known as Ariel.   Various people looked at it, and some thoughts were that it could be either a Boda or Orrefors sample, test piece, or 'frigger'.  Anyone here like to hazard a guess?

So pretty Leni - but I can't help I'm afraid.... :(

Will you show and tell your new pretties in the Cafe?
Thank you very much!

Thanks, Lynne.  I'm really hoping someone will have an idea about this one.  so many of my questions lately have 'dropped off' the page without a single response!  :(  Do I just ask very difficult questions, or what?

Yes, I'll post pics of my other purchases in the cafe.  Thanks for asking  :-*

Thank you  :)  But any ideas by whom?

I really know nothing about Ariel, and I'd love to know more!  Were there any makers or glasshouses which were known for it?

I did find this piece of Orrefors

Richard Gardner Antiques has a glossary of terms, that says of Ariel
Quote
Ariel glass -  Developed in Sweden around Circa 1936, it is an Art glass. It contains bubbles or channels of air. Patterns are sandblasted into a glass core, which is then encased in another layer of glass. Therefore trapping channels of air where the pattern has been cut away.

There is a piece at the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney that refers to Vicke Lindstrand at Orrefors inventing the technique with Edvin Oehrstroem.

So your first idea of Orrefors or Boda would seem to be most likely.

Thank you very much!

Thank you so much for that, Lynne!  :hiclp:   :kissy:

I have to say that although I would have said the bowl looked 'Scandi' to me, it was Adam A who suggested Orrefors, and Massimo (who sold it to me) who suggested Boda.  I'm not that clever!  ::)   ;)

I'm delighted to learn about the technique, how it was invented, and who by.  Many thanks again  :-*

Leni,

A number of Scandinavian houses used the arial technique - Orrefors, Kosta, Afors, Pukeberg, Strömbergshyttan, Nuutajarvi, Hadeland (the last two primarily linear patterns).

I have a piece I posted here in 2005, Bill G thought it was Strömbergshyttan - could be yours is from the same source.

Thank you, Taylog1  :D  I would say from your picture and description that mine is very likely to be from the same source as yours.  The top rim looks very similar to me - very thick, with a sort of ridge where the two layers of glass meet - and the concave pontil with a small rim being left around it is just as you describe!

So Bill thought Strombershyttan?  (Sorry, I don't know how to do the umlaut!)  Well, I know nothing about them, so  I guess it's time to do some research!

Thank you very much for your input  :-*
