Blue Vase - ID = Stevens & Williams

Here is the picture of my vase

http://tinypic.com/69lvt4.jpg

It has internal ribbing and a flint foot.

The base has the usual ground pontil mark

If this piece were in the US, my first thought would be a Tiffin Mid-century Modern piece.  Like this Tiffin Copen Blue Swedish Optic  Rose Bowl

They also made massive vases in the same design which are similar to yours but I think the top edge finish is different.  Tiffin's tend to be cut and ground.  Yours looks to be fire polished.

I am not sugesting that your piece is not Whitefriars just that the similarity struck me when I finally saw what you were talking about

The Tiffin Copen Blue pieces are some of my favorite.

Hello BJB

I'm sorry to dash your hopes, this vase is S&W/RB, not Whitefriars. The same quality though!

Hey Nigel?

I've heard of WF Sanctuary candle holders (I think I've seen black and white catalogue drawings?) but I haven't heard of Sanctuary Blue colour.  Is there one?  I'd be interested to see it.

PS Barbara...if you want a second opinion, there's always www.whitefriars.com (not doubting you Nigel, just putting myself in Barbaras place!).

Max xx  PS:  Nigel, found the colour    it's gorgeous!

Hi,

The WF/Powell colour known as Santuary Blue is very similar to Barbara's vase - although on my screen her vase does not appear to be as deep a hue as that of WF.

Naturally the colour can vary, but generally speaking the WF colour is more intense than that of S&W/RB's wares.

There are a number of shapes by WF/Powell that used Sanctuary Blue, and although it is not common I would say is was scarce, rather than rare.

I have posted it on the Whitefriars site, and have taken a better photo with less sun glare,as it is now very cloudy, this is a truer colour, which I hope will help.

I don't really mind which one it is as I love the colour, but I didn't realise that S/W did that deeper blue.

Nigel, do you think it was made before Stevens & Williams changed the name or after? Just so I could have a possible date of manufacture.

Barbara,

There is not a lot written about the 20th century production of Stevens & Williams. What information is available is a little repetative in that the same wares are often discussed. The problem is that the whole range of wares has not been comprehensively researched.

All I can say is that this particular range bares some similarity to the 'Rainbow Ware' pieces in construction, weight, and intensity of colour used. Rainbow Ware was produced both pre and post war. No dates I'm afraid.

The piece you have is out of a range that has been seen in a number of different shapes and in both amethest or green, often in conjunction with a clear foot.
