Clayton Mayers and Jacobean

Hi
Question for Glen and Chris, could you have a look at this link to an Advert for Jacobean glass

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v325/d554to/JACOBEAN1a.jpg

this shows a table set for breakfast, in it you can see a double preserve jar on stand.

Was this piece ever made by Davidson or was it only imported by Claton Mayers, I have seen an example in a shop in very good condition, I am sure they have no idea what it is they have as it is labeled Depression Glass.

The two jars have polished bases.

Tony,
This article suggests that the complete range were made by Davidson at some point.

My opinion only, but if the items you have seen, Tony, have polished bases, then I would say they are the Czech Inwald items. A second factor to back up my feeling, is that the Clayton Mayers address on the ad you show is the earlier address of 28 Gray's Inn Road. At that point they were importing a lot of Czech glass, and Inwald's glass was being shown in the trade ads. The later ads for Clayton Mayers (where they state "Jacobean tumblers are British made") was when they were at their North Circular Road address.

If the base on those items has a mirror shiny polish/grind, then I'll stake a slice of carrot cake that they are by Inwald.

Thanks Tony....now if you were just around the corner and not on the other side of the globe, I surely would. Meanwhile I am sipping a cup of Kenyan coffee (robust flavour......mmmmmm) and imagining the carrot cake (more mmmmmms)

Hi Tony and Glen,

Clayton Mayers moved to new showrooms in Hatton Garden in 1931 (I think). This particular advert predates this move so the glass would have been made by Inwald. In the Davidson production records, they list all of the Jacobean styles, but only a sub set where actually made. I cannot remember the details without consulting my notes, but it is included in our book on Davidson which will be published in August (Sorry could not resist plugging the book!).

The Jacobean range consisted of over 200 items, but for most of the time less than 100 were made by Davidson. Even fewer were made in coloured glass, most was plain flint (We have a list of the styles made, but no catalogue to match them to).

The building in which they had their showroom in Hatton Garden is still standing. I have been meaning to photograph it for the web site - job 99!

Regards

Chris

Chris, You're probably aware of this, but I'll mention it anyhow just in case it's of interest... in the Shire Album titled Pressed Flint Glass by Raymond Notley there are two 2/3 pages adverts from a 1929 catalogue for Clayton Mayer's Jacobean range. The bibliography doesn't say where the catalogue was sourced from though.
Cheers! Anne, da tekniqual wizzerd

In 1931 PG Diary Clayton Mayers are at 28 Gray's Inn Road, WC1. Advert mentions Jacobean as having 'stronger' sales and the introduction of the Herculedge glassware in 1930. No pics. Send a postcard for the 3 monthly 100 page catalogue.

In 1950 PG Clayton Mayers are in the North Circular Road NW2 (Advert for Jacobean tumblers). Still there in 63.

Chris do you have a copy of the 1963 entry?

Hi Frank,

Clayton Mayers moved into new showrooms and offices in 1931. They were still on the North Circular Road in the early 60s. In 1962 Johnsen & Jorgensen bought a large stake in Clayton Mayers. After the mid 1960s they seem to drop from view.
