Cracking in Murano
« on: October 19, 2007, 03:34:18 AM »
Hi All

I have 2 pieces of Murano that have cracked whilst washing them. One has cracked at the heavy bottom but not gone through another piece has cracked right through, most probably on the the bubbles through it, but it is 'just' holding together.

Are there any ways to avoid cracking this heavy glass?

I assume they cracked due to temp changes although I wash them in luke warm water and washing up liquid.

As I have just bought a great piece I don't want to crack it if I can avoid it.

regards from down under.

Bob, I have never had a problem with my Murano cracking. I have washed everything from the fragile Salviati and soffiati pieces to the heaviest bowls with no problem. I've used water of all temperatures (cold to very hot) with no problem. Was the glass cold when you put it in the warm water? If there wasn't a large temperature change, do you think the two pieces might have had repairs or faults that made the glass give way? Large temperature changes and hidden flaws are the only things I can think of that would cause breaking.

I am glad that you mentioned this. I had not given much consideration to the temperature of the water. My only worry up to now is making sure not to scuff or ding the glass by being careless -- I put a towel on the bottom of the sink. If you have had some break, it could be I need to be more careful with temperature. I wonder if anyone else has had the same problem.

I remember when i first started collecting glass i would buy a piece put it in the boot or trunk rush home all excited, out it would come often very cold straight into warm water, after a few seconds a crack would appear.hell i didnt notice that,no John  because it wasnt there, now i leave it to acclimatize for at least an hour then cool water, difficult but well worth while.

I would suggest washing the pieces with a wet towel, not under running water (cold or warm).
I had 2 pieces break in half while washing them this year, not fun.
