Anyone Familiar with "Toscany" Venetian Glass Label?
« on: November 20, 2007, 07:36:57 PM »
I've seen a few pieces now with this label. Does anyone know if these are older or newer, or anything else about the maker(s)? Here's one example:

And here's one I recently purchased (so cheap I couldn't resist!):

Thanks,

i haven't found much on Toscany (though i have a couple of labeled lighter/ashtray sets and a large optic compote that is probably of Empolian? origin) but, from what i understand they are in Empoli, Florence, not on Murano, Venice. here's a link to a thread with a labeled pitcher (second half of the thread addresses Toscany). http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,5182.msg42924.html#msg42924

I've been looking into it a little more, and it looks like different types of Toscany glass were made in different parts of Italy. Maybe Toscany is just an import label? Some of them, the ones that have a Murano look, say Genuine Venetian Glass on the labels, while others, the more mainland looking glass, say Genuine Neopolitan Glass, or simpy Made in Italy. And now I've just seen "Toscany - Hand Blown in Romania"! I'm starting to think there's more than one Toscany Glass, or that it's just an importing company (more likely imo). If it's an importer, not a maker, then I'm curious to know who made the Venetian (possibly Murano?) glass pieces...

We can add Poland to the source of Toscany glass. I've just seen a "Hand Blown Toscany - Made in Poland" label.

This may be the answer see http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_hb4360/is_199504/ai_n15230752 and http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_hb4360/is_199710/ai_n15237862 And then there's this on ebay 190174306728. Makes sense that they source worldwide

hat does make sense. So I guess Toscany is just an importing company.

My "Toscany" duck has arrived. Any opinions as to whether or not this is Murano glass? Guesses on age? And another question...The duck has clearly been glued onto the base, and quite sloppily I might add! Do you think it was made this way, or do you think this was done later as a repair?

I hope that is the case, Anne. If it's original, that doesn't bode well for the quality! If a repair, then this isn't in the condition described in the auction, but chances are I would only get my $.99 back after paying for return shipping. Oh well...

The duck looks fine but his foot seems a bit oversized, maybe a marriage of two sad cases. Old glue though
