Hi Ray

I have a concave base, amber flashed weight with a swan engraved. That is in a rather coarse style, and I thought it might be Bohemian. But the specific gravity and both short and long wave UV (checked by Kev H) matched antique Baccarat weights.  I am dubious about using profiles to help with attribution unless you are fairly confident the weight has not been repolished (ie there are original blocking marks on the surface).  The stag motif was fairly popular in 'Bohemia', so that might be the source of yours.  Does it feel like dense lead crystal?

Below is the top view and profile of the swan weight.

Alan.

thanks Leni and Alan

the profile is the same as yours Alan, and it still has block marks on the glass so it's not been repolished, what colour do it glow under normal UV black light Alan?

thanks
cheers Ray

Hi Ray

With long wave UV (black light), you just get the indication that it is high percentage lead glass - that is to say, a rather faint bluish tinge.

UV fluorescence is an extremely complicated subject.  For example, as you add more lead to a basic glass mix, the blue colour gets stronger, then as you add more and more, it gets fainter again.  And the intensity depends upon other things...according to the experts, the final colour and intensity of fluorescence depend not just on the constituents of the glass, but can also be affected by the annealing process, and the furnace gases (!) - hence I am very uneasy about making anything other than generalisations based on UV fluorescence. It is a useful tool, but the 'it's dusky pink, so it must be St Louis' type of approach is a bit optimistic, I feel, to say the least.

Hi Ray

These weights are relatively rare, but they also seem to be rather a 'special interest' area, so there are not many sales or buyers. The few I have seen sell in the past few years have, as I recall, been in the £150 - £300 range (or equivalent in US $)
