Attenuated bottle? - ID = Isle of Wight
« on: January 26, 2008, 10:07:40 AM »
I bought this gorgeous bottle fairly recently - I'm thinking it's a Mdina attenuated bottle?  Not that I know very much about Mdina, so I could be quite wrong.  The only thing that puts me off a little is the cobalt blue colour at the base of the bottle...very attractive, but Mdina?

Snapped off pontil to the base and signs of wear to base 'rim' where it sits.  Measures 14" high.
Just to let you know, I will be putting this on ebay - when I can find a box that's the right size and strong enough...  ^-^ :)

Thank you. xx

Hi Max,

I'm not 100% sure but it looks more like Isle of Wight from the Aurene range. A nice find!

Hi Max  :hiclp:
super bottle, i agree its got to be an Isle of Wight bottle. According to Mark Hills book,
all attenuated bottles 1972-82 have broken pontil marks, as there is no space for an
added pontil stamp, without comprimising the stability.

Nice bottle. I agree Gold Aurene, there's a vase shown in Mark's book with a lot of blue at the bottom. Yours is the smaller and scarcer variant. 'Most [of the attenuated bottles] were made by Michael himself.'

Welcome back Max, we missed you.    :hiclp: :hiclp:

Thanks Robbo, Andy & Christine x

Well, I got the Michael Harris bit right then...  ;)  I do get a bit mixed up with IoW and Mdina sometimes  :P

You're fine with your information from the Mark Hill book Andy, you gave him a mention in your post which covers it.  I should get that book myself really, but I don't come across Mdina or IoW glass very much generally.

Cheers all xx  :D
