Cast Fish. Reg No signed Guy Underwood 1931
« on: February 01, 2008, 02:06:11 PM »
Etched on one side with "Rd. 765784" and on the other "Guy Underwood" and "1931"

Little is known about the company (unless recent knowledge and it is mostly assumed to be in the 1900-14 period, this extends it somewhat as does the information below) and he has been credited with cast glass.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=220192814856

partly guessing on the Underwood but it matches this signature on eBay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Antique-Bermondsey-Art-Glass-Bowl-1914-Signed_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQitemZ290150673686

and this auction record confirms it "A GUY UNDERWOOD GLASS FIGURE modelled as a blue fish within a green painted "wave" base, signed and dated 1933, 7 1/4" high"  sold for £85

see also this GMB posting from Nigel

Does anyone know who that registration number is credited too?

Great find!

I can't really offer anything as the info is mirrored in great-glass.co.uk - your mention of a previous topic was not linked, but I think you mean this one?

It was a lucky find, I remembered the cast fish discussions and could not link the RD Number, so it was fingers crossed that no-one else had applied the logic. The registered name might give a different company to Bermondsey or just Guy Underwoods name. However, it does extend his documented period quite clearly. The signatures are extremely hard to see, the seller did well with his pictures.

I dredged my bookmarks and found the UK Intellectual Property Office:

http://www.ipo.gov.uk/design/d-find/d-find-number.htm

However, entering the design number: 0765784 (needs 7 digits) doesn't reveal anything. This site has always confused me a little - is it patent designs, or registered designs?

http://www.ipo.gov.uk/search/index.htm covers patents, designs and trademarks
What it fails to is say how far back they go, checked it last week. Might be in the GA blue book, where is Bernard?  :)

I have the Blue Book too Frank! :)  But, your reg no isn't in there...  765706 dated 1/7/1931 is registered to J C Cottle (who?) and the next one is 765867/8 on 6/7/1931, to Crane-Bennett (again, who?) so that gives you a nice tight dateline but no registrant I'm afraid. (Incidentally, the above RD nos are not shown on Great Glass.)
Cheers! Anne, da tekniqual wizzerd

Here is a picture, 13 large views in the Glass Catalogue (Member project) and it will be in the Zoo when it is working again.
