Whitefriars door stop paperweight
« on: February 12, 2008, 10:37:47 PM »
I have this door stop shaped paperweight, concentric millefiori with a 1972 monk cane (link will take you to a full gallery of views):

www.clarkagency.co.uk/clicpicfeb/wf_door_stop/_local_wf_door_stop.htm

I have gone through all the catalogues on the Whitefriars site, searched through ebay, checked as many retail sites as I can, and I can't find this shape.

Either I have a duff, or I am missing the shape somewhere. Can anyone help please?

Thank you very much!

Lynne

Lynne

I have seen the Whitefriars message board postings on this. Maybe for completeness you should post your findings here for those interested who have not seen elsewhere.

I haven't seen one of these before either !

Thank you John - will do then...

John very kindly contacted Ray Annenberg with the pictures of the weight, and had a positive id from him,

this is John's message from the Whitefriars.org noticeboard:

Quote
Hi Lynne I can confirm your weight is an experimental or trial piece by no other than Frank Hill, probably not many made thats why it is not in the catalogues .I showed your pics to Ray Annenberg, thats were the info comes from.Ray took the task over from Frank just after yours was made. Regards John.

this of course means that it gets to sit for a while on the shelf alongside the PS201 pink butterfly undated WF , and a pretty miniature blue P14 with a bit of frit inside which has meant nobody wants it.

Add to that my very pretty lampworked William Manson, the St Louis (very expensive) bouquet, and my William Walker, and I am starting to look very like a collector.

and then there are my blue and green perfume bottles - including a Peter Layton and Norman Stuart Clarke ....I shall have to watch out... 8)
Thank you very much!

Just to add something extra ... in John Simmonds' book Paperweights From Great Britain 1930-2000, there is an example of this weight (also 1972) but it is not faceted. The design is broadly similar to some of the older bubbled "doorstop paperweights" as shown in the 1969 catalogue in the Museum of London Whitefriars book.
