Opalescent glass bowl with a man in the middle - ID = Cesari
« on: February 21, 2008, 08:52:21 PM »
HI folks,I'm new to this forum. Seems I stumped the ebay PGP board and it was suggested that I come over here and ask you nice people. The bowl has a grape & vine decoration with a man's face in the middle. It measures just under 8" dia. and 1 3/4" h. Here's hoping someone can come to my rescue.
TIA

Hi and welcome to the board, glad to see that you've taken the plunge.   :hiclp:

I've amended your links as HTML doesn't work here on the board - to post a link you just need the URL and that's all, the board magically does the rest for you.

It's a lovely bowl but I can't help with who made it, hopefully someone will know though, fingers crossed for you. :)
Cheers! Anne, da tekniqual wizzerd

Very nice dish/bowl - I can't help much either except the three main makers of this type of glass was Jobling, Sabino or Lalique - Etling is another that produced opalescent glass.

What's your location, Jaque? That would help.

Thank you,  Anne:)

David, I'm pretty sure all Sabino and Lalique are signed. Not sure about the others. I did look into them though. It's not signed

I'm in a suburb of Cleveland, OH, and I bought it at a Thrift.

Definitely French. I've seen quite a few of these in France. I've always believed they were made as a promotional item, the man's head may be a trademark or similar used by a company.

As to maker, definitely not Jobling or Lalique. It doesn't appear in P. Decelle's Sabino Maitre Verrier de L'Art Deco 1878-1961 Catalogue Raisonne so most likely not Sabino. Etling were a retailer, not a manufacturer. Most of their glass is believed to have been made by Choisy-le-Roi. I wouldn't rule out Choisy-le-Roi as the maker, though equally it could well be by another producer.

I would think the best course of action is to look into the man's head design and see if you could match it to a company. A lot of promotional pieces of this type seem to have been made for Vineyards or for restaurants, so that may be a starting point, particularly given the grapevine pattern on the bowl.

Steven

I've been wondering if, rather than a bowl, it could be a part of a lampshade, perhaps made for a specific location such as a restaurant?  Some of the lampshade glasses we've seen in these styles are drilled to take chains but others rest in a metal framework so no holes would be needed.  The depth at 1½" seems to be very shallow for a bowl too - it wouldn't hold very much - whereas a lampshade could be much shallower.

I agree the man could be the clue - he reminds me a little of a leprechaun in that hat!

Well, I agree about the man being a trademark. I'll try working on that for a bit.. Meantime, still hoping someone can come up with the maker.

Thanks,
Harriett

Hi again Harriett, I've just spotted an Etling grape and vine pattern vase HERE which it's worth you comparing with your bowl for similarities. No wee man in the centre sadly, but the vase is marked Etling.

Thanks Anne,
I did see that when I first started checking makers. With your second opinion I will look into it more.
