Anna Fogelberg Cactus Vase, and Nazeing Vase
« on: February 28, 2008, 05:38:00 PM »
Hi,

I managed to buy this Webb Cactus vase engraved by Anna Fogelberg ( signed on the foot base).

It is in the Millers "Glass of the 20's &30's" page 38 but I don't know how accurate the " very rare and maybe a prototype " blurb is, and the price seems to be way OTT.

Has anyone got any information about the lady or the vase?

At the same time I bought this vase and I think it is Nazeing. It has a lovely combed pattern and a deep ground pontil.

Many thanks from a very stressed Mother of the Bride to be  ::)

The attribution is correct and should also be marked 'Made exclusively for the Rembrandt Guild' c1935. Although the rembrandt guild mark is often omitted and tends to cause suspicion when it is not there.  ::)

Put the other one in a separate thread.

Hi Frank,

Many thanks. Will have a better look at it tomorrow now its clean, it was filthy the whole thing was about the same colour as the base.

Could do with it being worth the £1,500 quoted in the Millers guide as  have just paid the deposit for the photographer, car hire and the church  :o

Still one daugher down only two to go  ;)

My knowledge of their value is 20 years old.

Hi Frank,

To be honest value is what someone is prepared to pay for an item at the time, and bears no relation to "book prices" so am under no illusions what so ever, but a little bit extra would be nice  :)

However, I am wondering if it is better to put it in a good auction rather than list it on ebay, but having never sold anything at a "posh" auction house, I have no idea which one to use or if the commission would kill it.

With the RG mark it will do well at any specialised deco glass sale, you could also do well by selling to a top dealer of the period who will be less concerned if it lacks that mark. 20 years ago that make tripled the value but if that holds true today I cannot say. Struck me as a silly distinction but as they are relatively scarce I suppose just having an example of that particular mark is desirable. ::)

It doesn't have the RG mark on the base, just a lot of wear all over the foot, so it may have worn off, yes??

I am afraid that I do not know any dealers personally who would like to buy the vase, and there certainly aren't any in the local area.

I might phone Mellors and Kirk in Nottingham and see if they know anything about it, or have any specialist sales. They are the nearest good auctioneers, unless I try Bamfords in Derby.

Barbara — Don't get too optimistic.   Two years ago I really struggled to sell a Kendal biscuit barrel, with the Walsh England mark but lacking Clyne Farquharson's signature, despite Eric Reynolds confirming that the combination of marks was unique in his experience.   Collectors of the Farquharson designs known to have been marketed by Walsh as designer signed ranges (Arches, Birds, Leaf, Kendal, Albany, Barry, and Rainsford) can be extremely choosy, some only collecting those carrying the NRD and date mark in addition to the signature.

You might consider asking Simon Cottle of Sotheby's what service he could provide in selling this vase.   I wouldn't recommend a local non-specialist auction house.

Hi Bernard,

Many thanks for the info. I will try and get in touch with Simon  Cottle later today. I am just enjoying having it at the moment to be honest, its not often I have a piece that is in a book, even though it hasn't got the mark.

Its on the shelf in the living room at the moment and every now and then I sneak another look at it  ;D

Hi Bernard,

Just got my wrists slapped at Sotherby's, Simon Cottle doesn't work there anymore, so a very snooty lady told me. Have you got any idea where he is now?

Talked to the ceramics and glass expert at Sotherby's and will be sending some photo's off to her, she sounded very nice and rather interested so I will keep you posted.

Many thanks once again,

Barbara
