Roy:  Your gater is shown in Cyril Manley's book, DECORATIVE VICTORIAN GLASS, color photo #271. (quote) "This is an opalescent crocodile made at Richardson's with hand moulds.  The body is moulded, but the tail is pulled out whilst hot.  Only intended as ornaments, c. 1890.  The mould was purchased by Thomas Webb, c 1935.  14.6 cm (5 3/4") long." (end quote).

I have owned one of these.  even with a badly chipped foot, I sold it for $250.  I have seen them sell for $400 USD.  You should do well with this one!  Size can vary from one specimen to another, due to the pulled tail.  There is usually a little roughness on the tail, but that is how it was made. They pulled the tail, then snapped it off.

Hi Dave

Thank you very much, very interesting , I only really bought the item because I thought it may be of interest for the Zoo, I did wonder about age and first thought Victorian but rejected that and then thought more likely to be maybe Fenton and a lot lot later, how wrong you can sometimes be, the only thing that gave me any doubts about that was that I was told it came from a house clearance, I can see what you mean about the tail because at a first look you may say the end of the tail is missing but its not , 100% complete and undamaged, so to could well be late Victorian is there any way to tell for sure if its earlier or later

many thanks Roy

I personally think it is Richardson.  Webb acquired the molds in 1935, but that does not mean they made any.  I have never seen any documentation that both companies made them.  the only sure way to tell would be to know the personal history of the piece through the family.  I have heard that Webb used a bit more uranium in their uranium glass than Richardson, but unless you are both a Webb and Richardson expert and have numerous examples of both, I don't think anyone could tell.  You could safely advertise it (if you plan on selling it) as a Richardson piece.

Definitely matches Dave's one in the Zoo, so great to illustrate the tail variation.

Yes Dave, so with two together the variation is going to be nicely illustrated.
