Czech B & W Vase? or maybe Enameled Glass?
« on: March 13, 2005, 05:07:39 PM »
Hello everyone!
Here's another little piece I bought recently...
http://www.svazzo.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/.pond/bandwvase.jpg.w300h400.jpg

Was told it could be Czech glass, but I havent seen any in only black and white. Most I have seen is very colorful. I also thought it could be an enemaled piece since the bottom is not polished down, and the white spots cover the bottom. It does however have a polished rim. Is there any way to tell the difference between the enamel surface or just a painted on effect with glass? You can also feel the little drops of glass with your finger.
Measures 5 1/8" tall x 3" wide, and cased in very dark Amethyst glass.
Just to add, I dont know its age.
Any thoughts? Thanks!
Javier

I think that is Makora glass from Poland. Quite heavy, solid black glass with white frit rolled in, mould blown & cut off at the top.

Enamelled versus painted:

A piece that shows "stretching" of applied colours normally means the application has been done when still hot. Then the blowing (with or without mould) causes different size "blobs", with the largest / thinnest being around the wider parts of the shape.

I would not think even the most patient of workers would easily achieve the same effect by painting the "blobs". In any case painted work would usually be done 'cold', after the main shaping, but perhaps fired on later.

Hi KevH!
Thanks for that explanation. That is just what the vase looks like. The white is thinner in the middle of the vase.

Hi Ivo!
Thanks fo rteh tip. I'll try and find out some info about Makora glass. Also do you know what time frame it could be from?

Thanks for the info so far!
