Mappin & Webb Ships decanter, - ID = Royal Scot Sheraton
« on: April 02, 2008, 12:25:51 PM »
£20 in a charity shop!  Most ive ever spent in one go!
Couldnt resist it though , boxed Mappin Webb Ships Decanter, as new!
A sticker in box says English Crystal, any ideas which company would make such a quality
piece for them?
Regards
Andy

ps i could email M & W, but thought id ask the experts on here first ;D

Andy, search the base carefully for a maker's mark. M&W retail from makers such as Waterford and Edinburgh crystal so you may find one of their tiny etched marks on the base.

Hi Anne,
definitely no marks, ive sent a request to their Customer services, as the little sticker says
English hand cut lead crystal, so im thinking that rules out Waterford or Edinburgh.
I will see if i get a reply.

Hmmm true.... Royal Scot is another possible (based in Essex despite the name!) http://www.royal-scot-crystal.co.uk/

A pic of the decanter upright and out of the box would be useful, and a closeup of the pattern and of the stopper. :)

Hi Anne,
more piccies, a lovely finish on the crystal, very highly polished, but then i suppose thats what
Mappin and Webb customers like me expect ;D (although i got mine at the hospice shop)
Andy

ps anne, i think a 'gather' of glass collectors is best so far ;)

Isn't Stuart or Webb-Corbett more likely? I suspect Royal Scot are a decorating outfit for the gift trade.

Do you think the stopper is original that type are often replacements.

Hi John,
99.9% certain its original, its never been out of the box, and stopper has its own little hole
in the packing. There was a few spots of mould on and in the decanter, and on the box, but
ive managed to clean it all near enough to perfect.

Well, if you click on the link,
http://www.royal-scot-crystal.co.uk/
and then on silver mounted decanter, there is a piccie of a very similar Ships decanter, same stopper,
i think the pattern looks a little different, but hard to tell, their pic is not as good as mine :D
And you cant tell the quality either from their picture!
I may ask them.
