Helena Tynell Riihimaen Lasi Emma bottle
« on: April 09, 2008, 01:44:50 PM »
I have an Emma bottle, that came with a square decanter stopper, the glass seems the same colour, but has a texture to it that seems more in keeping with an Italian Empoli decanter, rather than a Riihimaen one.  Does the Emma bottle come with a stopper, or has the original owner simply matched it up with one?

Many thanks,

I have on in green, but no stopper. If your stopper has a plastic thingie, it is probaby Oberglas retromatched; and of course (but you knew that) if it wobbles it has no business on top of Emma.

Hi Ivo, thanks.  No it doesn't wobble , but to my eye in any case the bottle looks much much better without it, the stopper unbalances the proportion of the whole item.  My gut instinct was that it didn't belong with it at all, and wondered if the auction house that was unpacking and matching the glass had got it wrong, and put it together just on the basis of the colour alone, or if the original owner had put them in together.

I hadn't seen any Tynell bottles/decanters, only vases, up to now, so just thought it safer to check in case it should have had a stopper, but I am very pleased to hear your one doesn't have one either.

I am finding lots of Emma vases around, but hardly any in the bottle shape. Is it less common do you know?

In the book Helena Tynell on page 116 of products designed by the artist in the cataloges of the Riihimaki Glassworks 1949 - 1988 the Emma forms are shown without a stopper.

hi I'm new to 'joining in' to the message board.

thought i would add that ive seen several Kaappikello (the one with the double circle) as decanters and two with stoppers which match the square stopper in style and i think in texture to the picture of the Emma one on this page.

i have also seen several Emma decanters and one or two with stoppers that match todays picture.

so there are lots around. Ive never bought one as i prefer the vase style and wasn't totally sure of authenticity.

though if i did find one cheap enough i probably would buy it ... just in case.

In case it helps, here is a close up of the stopper.

Bill is it the vase that is shown or the bottle too?  and can you see if this particular form is cased or not, considering the comments in the thread Christine highlighted above?
