« on: January 05, 2007, 06:02:48 PM »
There was a company called Duroray in Walthamstow ( Sutherland Road) that did masses of slumping for the tourist and hotel trade from the 1970's. Now owned by Instrument glasses Brian Botterman and Shirley Tucker who was manageress!
Tel was 0208 527 7575.Last went there 2 years ago!
Stephen.

Company is now called B & S Glass Industries and they have a website here: http://mekoit.com/portfolio/bands/aboutus.html - they now seem to specialise in architectural glass.

Are these the producers of the black on white image promo/souvenir stuff like these?    http://yobunny.org.uk/gallery1/displayimage.php?pos=-858 which are printed onto clear glass.

I have quite a few of these and they are different to those I suspect are Chance, like this boxed example on opal flashed glass:    http://yobunny.org.uk/gallery1/displayimage.php?pos=-1095

Interesting that on that link they say "B & S Glass Industries(formerly Duroray) was established in 1928 to produce durographical and screen printed  glassware ".

So looking back to 1931 and 1933 we find in Blackhorse Lane, Walthamstow, Duroglass Ltd makers of Scientific & laboratory ware with agents R Johnston & Co Ltd, London WC2. The/name and location suggest not a coincidence. They or Company house would help resolve that. As lab glass producers would need printing technology it is a small step to making that a core business after WW2 when larger labware makers would take a larger market share.
Can you amend the Duroray entry please Anne.

I suggest: in brackets (probably Duroglass Ltd 1928, now B & S Glass Industries)

It doesn't look like they were the same company Frank.

Duro-ray was a limited company in its own right, and is now called B. & S. GLASS INDUSTRIES LTD.
Date of Incorporation: 31/07/1928 Company No. 00232408
Date of name change: 30/04/1992 Previous Name DURO-RAY LIMITED
Address: 47 SUTHERLAND ROAD, WALTHAMSTOW, LONDON, E17 6BH
No mention of Duroglass in their historical details. [Source: Companies House register)

"Duroglass" also "Durosil" also "Duro Sil R" also "Duroven"    Duroglass Ltd., 2/3 Norfolk Street, London.
Makers of lighting, scientific glass, fireproof glassware and ovenware.
[Source: British Glass after the War, Glass Museum http://www.glass.co.nz/trademarks.htm]

I can't find them in the online register, but I did find an obituary of their former Chairman, Douglas Heriot Baird [in PDF format with some interesting glass info: http://www.rsc.org/delivery/_ArticleLinking/DisplayArticleForFree.cfm?doi=JR9400000562&JournalCode=JR]

and a mention of Duroglass Ltd in the Victoria County History, A History of the County of Essex: Volume 6, published 1973 (see online version: http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=42779, which quotes the Walthamstow Post, 22 Mar. 1951 as its source for the following:

Quote
Duroglass Ltd., laboratory glassware, built a factory in Blackhorse Lane during the First World War. It closed in 1926, but reopened in 1932 to produce lighting glassware and, later, television components. The firm ceased about 1965, when the premises were taken over by Industrial Glass Co. Ltd., which itself ceased by 1968.

I can't get that B and S link to work, so rang them.
B&S was chosen as a new name for Brian Botterman and Shirley Tucker, his Senior manager who he made a partner. (Brian and his son-    - ex Saracens Hooker Rugger player - known as "Botts" own Instrument Glasses in Ponders End, making glasses for instruments.
Shirley who is semi retired and her son Colin and daughter in law Angela have moved the business out to Thunderidge in Ware. Herts and deal mainly with specialist Architectural Glass.
We are going to see them tomorrow to see if they can help us on a slumped glass project.
 website is now http://www.bandsglass.co.uk/

Hi guys.
I am a director of B & S Glass Industries Ltd, formerly duroray, and should be able to clear up most of your
questions as was around when making the ashtrays which dried up in the early 90 s with the  smoking issues
coming in. We still have the old furnace for slumping the ashtrays which I have rebuilt and built a glass bending
furnace "the old fashioned way"..

Hello Colin, and welcome to GMB.

As someone who has researched the slumped glassware of Chance Brothers, I would be interested in any information you might have on Duroray. I was aware of the name when working on Chance Expressions where it got a mention, but was never able to take it further. Sadly, with Chance Additions (the (second volume) now in print, I can't include it here either.

Are there any catalogues, price lists, etc. that can be scanned? I would be most interested to compare Duroray with the other manufacturers of slumped glassware, like Chance and Webb. Thanks in advance.
