Topic: Latticino ground millefiori canes weight

Hi all

Latest weight I can't ID!  It looks like a caithness weight from 1976 designed by Willie Manson, CT60 in the Charlton book, but has to many canes surrounding the central cane.  Mine has 14, CT60's have 11.  I've been told that Paul Ysart made some very similar weights, so I was wondering (ok hoping!) that it's one of those.

The canes sit in the latticino base, and the base is completely flat.  2.5" high, 3.25 wide.

Ian - I may have to disappoint you: the number of canes in the circle does not seem to be a very good criterion - mine has 20 ! And mine is scratch signed "Laticino Caithness Scotland" plus a Caithness sticker. Another difference is the base: yours looks ground flat and polished - mine is just fire polished. Our canes match.

Some incredibly similar canes, but I thought the base was wrong for an Ysart?

Looks polished flat. Which is OK particularly Harland period.

Wuff is right ... the number of canes in the circle varied a lot. I have two, one with a CG cane and one without. One has 22 canes in the circle the other 25.

I was told (by Peter Holmes, I think) that all "CT-60 Latticino" from Caithness Glass had Ysart canes at the centre and outside but Caithness canes in the circle.

The design was also made at Paul Ysart's Harland studio and called "Milli Fiori" (see catalogue pages reproduced in Ysart Glass, page 163, with one dated as 1975). Two examples of the Harland version are shown and both have differing canes in the circle, whereas the CG ones have the same cane throughout the circle. If that is a definite regular feature, then it will be a sure way to separate the Ysart / CG ones in the absence of a sig cane.

I have just purchased a very similar weight, with the outside canes of three pairs- I was very impressed when I opened the parcel. The seller stated that it was made in 1976 by William Manson- would that be senior or junior? regards Carol
