Very large Irice perfume
« on: May 05, 2008, 12:35:46 AM »
Hi Everyone,
I found this today and I know very little about Irice.  I'm hoping you can tell me where it was made by the label that if left and maybe what year.  This piece is 10 3/4" to the top of the gold.  The petals are marked underneath with something I can't read and I included a picture of that mark.  Also, any ideas on the value?
Thanks so much for looking.

Irice was a trademark of Wholesaler/Importer Irving W. Rice & Co., Inc., 15 West 34th St. NY. The text on the petal looks German but as I think it is abbreviation, not sure... I cannot make out some of the letters.

I'm not sure what those petals are made of but with the sun hitting the letters just right they look like:
Ges.Gesch.  I thought it may help identify the coutry.

Best I can come with is Gesellschaft geschieden, meaning company separated.  Perhaps a company that made parts for another... Pamela should be able to clarify.

One use I found in a glass company, Menzel Gebruder Bavaria, context (courtesy Glass-Study) was "Spezialitäten: Parfümflakons in kristallähnlicher Qualität, Flaschen für den engl. Markt und die Dominions, stets ges. gesch. Neuheiten in Flakons und Flaschen.:

They made pressed and hollow glass including this type of container particularly for the English Speaking market. Run by a Paul Menzel in 1925 but no trace on the web, but there is now a GERHARD MENZEL GLASBEARBEITUNGSWERK GMBH & CO. KG which may or may not be related.

However it is highly speculative to link this company to your piece just on the Ges. Gesch. mark, I mention it as they made this type of item and the context of the mark.

Someone has suggested the bottle was made in Portugal and like you said the flower made be from another part of the world!  Thank you for your remarks.

Thank you, Ivo!  That would be for the patent on the flower, great.  That mystery is solved.
