The compote is known as Fenton's Mikado. A great name, isn't it?  :)

The interior design is the Mikado of course. It's a stylized oriental design featuring the chrysanthemum.

The more realistic cherry pattern which you can see down the stem is an adaption of Fenton's Cherry Chain design. Cherry Chain is what I call an "embroidery" pattern - it's an intricate design that imitates detailed stitchwork.

Hi Glen,
Thanks for all the info. I had a feeling the flower in the center was chrysanthemum.
I found in the standard encyclopedia of glass on page 99 the Fenton's cherries pattern.
Now that we have the outside of the bowl and the stem identified, do you think the outside pattern is indeed Fenton's Cherries?  I am also curious to the years it was made? Any Idea? Also any idea how rare it is? In my book it says the pattern is rare & desirable, but I dont know if that is just for the footed bowl they list or all items.
Thanks so much  :hiclp:

Hi there Vintage!  :)

I confess to knowing very little about carnival glass, and I only own one of Glen's books; unfortunately not Carnival Glass, The Magic & The Mystery' also by Glen which she mentioned above.

I'm a bit confused by your posting.  I think Glen has identified your compote as 'Mikado', which from a quick scoot around Google, comes with cherries around the outside.  I feel that 'Fenton's Cherries' (which I also Googled) is a very rare thing that is separate to this compote.

Have a rootle around Google, see what you think - sorry to butt in on your thread!   :)

Yes confused as well, because the mikado was mentioned as the pattern inside the bowl, with a different pattern on the stem. In the Standard Encyclopedia of Carnival glass the have the same pattern outside as mine, and the interior is described as plain or having a unlisted floral pattern. Since this bowl has 3 different patterns, I just wanted to check because I didn't understand........  So Sorry

No reason to be sorry Vintage - I loved having a look at Carnival Glass anyway, it's something I don't look at often enough.  :)

You have a very nice compote there, so well done in finding such a lovely thing!   :hiclp: :D
