Can anyone help, please? Three lions mark + letters FHER
« on: July 16, 2008, 07:00:33 PM »
Hello!

Found this little vase on a car boot sale last weekend and simply couldn´t
leave it amongst the other 50 cent stuff.

I´ve been searching for some time, or at least been trying, but for being
rather new to glass or the internet, my results where - none.

The vase is green to torquoise with a slightly iridescent surface.
The mark seems to be printed.

height is 78mm resp.
            3.5"

Any information is welcome - hope, my lack of knowledge doesn´t bother
anyone here!

TIA
Dirk

3 lions are usually associated with Jersey or Guernsey (forget which) but I suspect these are unrelated. It may be a town crest.

It looks a bit like a reproduction of ancient glass.

Searching for a coat of arms might find the arms.

Thanks, Frank!

Good hint. 3 lions are actually associated with both.
You can even find Fher as a surname there - might still
be an abbr. aswell!

The Guernsey lions are usually rather different with a full head, no neck visible and the front end of the body low to the ground. But the ones on the vase could, I suppose, be very stylised versions.

It is similar but yours is unlikely to be Guernsey Glass. Who unfortunately no longer exist.

For a good version of the Lions coat of arms of Guersney (and Jersey and Sark) check out this page in Wikipedia. Scroll down a bit when you get there.

Note that the Guernsey and Jersey lions have the "full head, no neck" I mentioned earlier. Replicating that emblem as a glass prunt mark will clearly show differences. The image for the ebay example mentioned shows a good impression but the head is just a "lump" and the tails all end to the rear instead of two ending further into the body. Three examples I have are a) almost invisible, b) and c) fairly clear in part but with thinner legs and tail - but are much the same as the ebay one.

In dirk's 3 Lions, the animals are not low to the ground, the heads are entirely different and there is a thick neck. But it might still be a version of the Guernsey or Jersey ones, although I feel it's unlikely.

Another information popping up after years. Obviously Fher was a pharmaceutical company located
in Mainz - not a producer - and this was a giveaway.
I´ve tried to track them down,  but it seems they no longer exist...
