Just had this delivered, very happy and its a keeper, love the colour,
as i suspected, its not quite the same as my cellophane items, its not quite as heavy (almost)
it has a broken Pontil, 9 3/4" wide, 3 1/2" tall on a clear footed base.
Could it be a Scot?

Cheers,
Andy

Definitely not!  Schneider with a broken pontil, you can hear the rattle of the Schneiders as they revolve in their graves. Modern Polish, judging from the underside.

Cheers Ivo ;D

(sorry i was just kidding with Frank  ;)  didnt really think Schneider!)

Its a lovely bowl, certainly staying on the shelf, certainly not as old as 1930s,
a fair bit of age wear, I dont think it was made in the last few years, maybe 60s 70s 80s ?
I havent seen one quite like it.
Just thought id add acouple of photos, technique is interesting, the pattern seems to be cased
inside clear, both from top and bottom, glass about 6mm wide.
no texture, smooth, inside and out.
The pontil mark has been heated to get rid of sharp bits, and its a bit like a 4 way pontil
mark, like ive seen on some London studio glass.

Cheers
Andy

Ivo, can you say which Polish companies left a pontil mark like this or was it the foot you were referring to ?

I'm finding use of this "cellophane" glass term confusing. Does anyone have a definition ? Is this a generally accepted term ? Thanks Ed.

'Cellophane' is a 'collectors' term that I coined in the 1980's to make it easy to distinguish this particular type of glass that has eluded identification for 20 plus years. The colours used are transparent and have the 'look' of cellophane. Less useful now with web capabilities but this quality of the colour never really shows in photographs. It is all from a single source and the purple bowl is not it.

See rows 2-4 here http://www.ysartglass.com/Ysart/NotYsart.htm the second image in row 3 (green base) almost succeeds in showing this quality of the colour.

I will add larger images and more examples when I add this page to Scotland's Glass as a indication of glass often described as Monart that is not so.

Thanks Frank
I did look at the examples on your site but still didn't get it, but since then I discovered your other postings on the subject and it's this explanation which I found most helpful:
Frank said  "It is the similarity of the colouring to old cellophane sweet wrappers that lead to my term for the glass."

I've come across the heated over pontil mark on many items of contemporary glass and I associate it with Polish. It is one of the reasons I turn an item over - to see if the pontil is finished in the recent manner.  Not sure if these are from one of the colour glass works like Tarnowiecz or Makora - they may be from further afield - perhaps baltic.
