Topic: Whitefriars large round Amethyst Soda Vase ( i think :-) )

I think i may have just had a good find, Charity shop £1.99
I havent seen WF Soda vase before, know very little, but saw it had polished pontil,
nice colour, well made and finished, so took enormous gamble and forked out my £2 
Very dirty, still soaking in my pictures. (was very dirty)
About 8 1/2 inches tall , 7 inches wide, just looked in my Whitefriars book, Lesley Jackson, page 136
and it looks pretty similar

I cant find the shape in the Whitefriars catalogues 1964 or 1966,
Im pretty convinced its ok, Lesley Jackson states, the necks were hand finished and
vary quite considerably in height and diameter, and the large Amethyst vase in the book, Lesley
says 'probably an experimental piece made between 1961-63 cf.pat no. 9595'

Caithness made some vases that IMO bear a striking resemblance to some of the WF soda range although I haven't handled any personally so I'm not entirely sure what the Caithness neck and base finishes are like.  The WF one that I think you're referring to as sold in my shop is a different shape ....

Hi Andy,

Sorry, but this is NOT a W/f's vase. Both the vase you are looking at in Jackson(ed) and the angular one have long been known as (Ithink) the only mistakes in the book. The Llight bulb shaped one is Scandinavian- sorry, I can't remember the manufacturer - and the angular one is by Ronald Stennett-Willson for King's Lynn Glass.

Take a close look and you will notice that the colours on those two pieces in particular are not consistant with the others. Sadly for new(er) collectors, the book doesn't come with a correction slip.

Some suggested Holmegard ,Christina and Paul (circa glass used to collect them) i am sure they will come to the rescue i sold them one or two way back in the dark age. JP

Definitely not Holmegaard. It's not a design I recognise from the factory, and during the period that they were prolifically using purple glass - the mid-1950s - all art glass was signed, even production seconds.

The shape of the neck is much the same as a larger green vase I have that has a Hadeland label from Norway.  The body has slightly different shape but has polished pontil.  I'll post a photo in the morning if that would help.
Yours might not be Whitefriars but it still looks like a good buy to me, lovely colour and shape, whoever made it.

Here are photos of my Hadeland glass.  Did I say green?  Mm, blue is closer to the colour.  Mine is also signed ' Hadeland 59 WJ' (for Willy Johansson)
