Bimini glass - labels?
« on: August 18, 2005, 08:07:14 PM »
Hi there,

Just wondering if there was anyone out there who is knowledgeable about Bimini glass and would know what sort of label to expect on a piece?

I have what I think is Bimini and it has a "foreign" label on it - would this be correct?

Thanks,
Fran

Hope that works OK - sorry about the quality, it's a little late at night to start taking photos!

Frank - thanks for Bimini page - I'd already read and digested that one  :D

You could be right, Ray. Looks like the neck. However, I have seen many "Bimini" snakes on eBay that probably aren't genuine – can anyone confirm this? Possibly Chinese?

So are the ones on eBay, I believe, although I doubt the quality can ever be as good.

Hi,
Respectfully suggest far too early to archive this. More items and information are appearing in print, and I would argue that it is better to leave this thread open for the time being. Examples of new thinking, for example, are suggested direct connections between Bimini, and the work of Jaroslav Brychta (see Ricke ed, Czech Glass 1945-1980: Design in an Age of Adversity Arnoldsche Stuttgart 2005).
With this kind of current review...... anything/something is possibly about to emerge from the wood-work, and the known current requests for information from Vienna, suggest answers may be more, rather than less likely to occur.

I have a couple of questions: Fran, where are you based?

Bimini originally was exported to the UK and elsewhere, from Austria, so a foreign label for a UK piece is acceptable, and may suggest an early piece, but once Bimini's owners had emigrated to the UK, "Foreign" is  much less likely.

Again the lack of catalogues is frustrating, but entirely understandable, from a very small company run by emigres, trying to start again.

regards,

Marcus
