My new figures
« on: August 25, 2008, 08:18:31 PM »
I bought these at an auction a couple of weeks ago (oh no, not again ).
They are fantastic pieces, they draw your eyes to them as you enter the room.
They are quite big,  Male H=39cm, W15cm......Female H35cm, W26cm (flare of the dress).

I have been trying to pin down the maker, but there are a lot of this style around and the only link I've found so far is "The Venetian Glass Company".
But that pair although having the same dress were smaller and not blackamoors.
I paid a fair amount (holiday fund goes for a Burton) £125 + expenses.
Probably not far from their value.
Can anyone help with attribution and are there many of the blackamoor type ?

I know nothing about this type of glass, except for the fact that 'Toffolo' (think that's G.Toffolo) of Murano is often associated with it.  I've seen signed stuff and things attributed that are not signed.

Thanks Max  :hiclp:

I wasn't aware of Toffolo, but now that you have nudged me in the right direction I've unearthed a good deal about his work.
I found the same pair at   http://www.davidcarrera-int.com/murano%20perfume%20bottles.htm.

I'm really pleased with them, but they have a lot of almost compacted dust in the little nooks ect.
Some patient cleaning to be done.

Rose, the single female figure is the same as mine, the pair are the amaller version of the same.
It seems to be that there are 3 different sizes. Thats the 2nd price in the £300's I've seen for a single figure.

I wonder what the actual title is for this pair?
I don't suppose we have any Toffolo experts on GMB ?

"edit"  rude of me !  Thanks Rose, great help

Thanks Frank,

It didn't enter my head to check your site, was there much of a migration of Venetian glassblowers to Britain ?

What a difference in style to, I would think thats unusual in any form of artist.

Just updated my data on Toffolo http://www.ysartglass.com/Ysart/YGpeople.htm
Quote
Franco Toffolo    1934 – 20??    Italian Maestro Glassmaker. Venini 1946-50. Left Italy c1965. Venetian Glass Company, Blackpool (UK) c1960-1980. Master glassmaker at Caithness glass until retiring to Crieff in 2002 some paperweights with initial cane FT. Now collaborating with John Deacons and producing occasional Ysart style glassware in John Deacons’ studio.

Note the much earlier date for arriving in the UK.

Venetian glass-makers have been migrating since at least the 1500s. Once they left they received an almost automatic death sentence, presumably that has changed now.
