Turquoise Suncatcher with Celtic Design
« on: August 25, 2008, 11:24:15 PM »
An interesting piece I picked up today - a large (160mm diameter) pressed suncatcher with Celtic knots and serpents. Unusually, the hanger is an applied curl of glass, rather than the usual pressed and drilled hole.

I'm thinking Norway or Sweden, rather than Britain.

Nic, it almost looks like a coat of arms design. Sue, sorry can't help further. Sue

Aye, it does look rather heraldic - but I suspect it's just a decorative Viking-esque motif.

Nic, check out some of the Irish makers too as these Celtic motifs feature lots in Irish wares.

Oh, that's a thought. I think in my mind I associate Irish glass with terribly tedious cut crystal - and nothing else.

Googling proved fairly fruitless, though, with searches for Irish suncatchers bringing up lots of naff sites (complete with Irish-themed midis playing in the background) selling brand new Irish-related stained glass suncatchers to Americans.

On the plus side, I also came across Jerpoint Glass Studio, who make those stretched bowls also produced by Bayel, Ikea, Holmegaard, Flygsfors, and a few others. I'll probably split this bit into a new thread, though.  ;D
