Chinese Art Glass
« on: August 28, 2008, 06:32:39 PM »
I said a while ago that there was a shop in Hastings that had amazing art glass at ridiculous prices.  I thought they were charging about £40 from memory, but in fact they're £29 each!  The pieces are about 10" - 12" high...and mostly very accomplished.

I asked the shop owner how they could sell such amazing glass for so little money...where did they come from?  She replied..."China".  She was kind enough to let me take some photo's.  I thought it'd be worth having them on here for information purposes.

I still fancy either the sommerso 'stacked balls' one or the green 'cup shape' with clear cylinders each side..  ;)

Maybe it's time to start giving China a little credit for some of the glass they produce!  Many people once they hear a piece is new and Chinese automatically think it's worthless.  Thanks for the examples!

I would venture to guess that these companies only have another 5-10 years ahead of them. After that, they will not be able to produce these sorts of items at anywhere near these prices. Put them side by side with some Italian pieces and you have a hard time telling which was produced where. I've seen imports from China coming to the US from old French companies. they forgot to remove the "made in China" labels.
There is one city in particular in India that used to have over 300 glass factories and over the last 10 years has lost about 75% of them. They claim the Chinese ran them out of business and they could no longer compete. It's always changing, and remember we'll some day think these were the "good old days".

The corps never think that far ahead, 5 years is like a lifetime to them. But yes they need to be noticed, it takes time to develop a world class pool of craftsmen, 20 years to a master. The pioneers in hunting out the early 21st century Chinese masters will help create the knowledge web both for collectors and the growing industry itself. And we all get to learn a bit of Chinese into the bargain :)

BTW: there are a couple of very good glaasblowers from the UK that have been in China for quite a few years running a couple of their factories. They have also enlisted the help of some very good Italians as well. I used to sell for a Mexican factory that had several of the Italian maestros come to Mexico for a couple of years in the early 70's and teach their craftsmen how to make some very fine figurines and figures. Most of those never left the Mexican market, but they were very good pieces. I'm not sure if they're still in business or not. I haven't had any communication with them in many years. I have a friend that was in the glass industry here in the US for 40 years and has been spending lots of time in China for the last 8-10 years working as a consultant. Amazingly, he found the government/union restrictions to production there were a lot less confining than they were here.

What sort of government/union restrictions?  When it comes to health and safety guidelines, it wouldn't surprise me at all if they were looser in China!

Makes me wonder how much, and what type, of glass has been produced in China in the last 50 years that we are unaware of because it wasn't made for export, at least not to the West.
