Topic: Large pink glass flower bowl with chrome stand... id = Sowerby

Can anyone please suggest who made this?  Pink glass - clear not frosted.  Glass vase is 13" wide, 7" deep and 3" tall, chrome stand is 17" wide, 7" deep, 5" tall. No makers marks at all on either the glass or the stand. Thanks!

It reminds me of Sowerby's #2634, but I don't think it was made in such a large size as this. More pondering needed........

Thanks Glen, I was thinking Sowerby myself, but I've not seen another quite so big either... and then I spotted another similar on Pamela's website which she has listed as Sowerby/Tyneside...  http://www.pressglas-pavillon.de/schalen/02676.html  - the whole style looks very much like mine except the ends of mine flare up and out more to follow the shape of the stand.  Pamela, can I ask how big your vase/bowl is please?

The one on Pamela's page looks as if it has the same proportions as the Sowerby 2634. It's around 9" across (about 23 cm).

It looks like mine is one of Pamela's with the ends stretched out and bent over a bit! That would account for the extra 2 inches at each end!  Thanks again Glen. Whoever made it I love it!

 :shock: So are we to assume that there are possible variations in this Sowerby design, as in the Bullrush vases, which can have the rushes straight up or turned out, and in the Bagley Equinox bowls, just as a couple of examples?  

If this is so, it looks like there might be many more designs than the 'basic' ones I thought I had learned to recognise!  :shock:  :roll:

my 'Sowerby Tyneside' jardiniere measures 24.8 cms across and 12 cms high. Unfortunately the bottom of yours is invisible through the lattice - is there a star? Perhaps you may add another photo  :wink:

Sowerby certainly did shape "standard" items differently on some pieces. One that benefited from a range of fabulous shapings is the Diving Dolphins bowl (at least six different edge shapings). Even little differences such as the cupping in or flaring out of a vase mouth, can be found, for example on the "Derby" vase. And of course, the Iris and Lily vases are a good example of variation, along with the Frog & Bullrushes vase that Leni mentioned.

From time to time a "whimsey" turns up too (a quirky shape that wasn't "in the line"). I have a very weird and wonderful "Pineapple" shape (Sowerby's 2349).  :?

However, I hadn't seen one of those 2634 salads (aka jardiniere shape) flared out like that before. It's a beauty. Incidentally, in Carnival Glass (yes it's known in Carnival) we call that pattern "Jagged Edge".
